Google committed another $15 billion to Malaysian data centres and named 3 new sites.
Ruth Porat announced the 2-year commitment on November 4 in Kuala Lumpur, with the prime minister present. Caveat: Google has published nothing itself that we could read.
Malaysia hosted one Google campus, built under a 2024 commitment.
It will host 3 more, with power and water written in.
Why it matters
The money buys capacity outside the United States and China, in a country whose grid and water it must also pay to build. Google will add more than 1 gigawatt of clean power with the state utility and spend $160 million on a reservoir and treatment plant. Anwar Ibrahim says conditions were imposed and accepted.
Established
- Ruth Porat announced $15 billion for 2027 and 2028.
- 3 sites were named, in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
- Anwar Ibrahim attended and called it a monumental milestone.
Not established
- Any capacity figure. No megawatts for the campuses are published.
- That construction has begun at any named site.
- Google's own wording. We could not read its release.

The record
Reported, not verified. Google published nothing we could read: its Malaysian blog carried no post on this and Data Center Dynamics refused every fetch. The account rests on Bernama, Malaysia's national news agency, which reports the prime minister's remarks, with EdgeProp Malaysia naming the 3 sites and Malay Mail carrying the employment and water figures. The dated verification event: by December 5, a Google post, a Malaysian Investment Development Authority statement, or a Tenaga Nasional filing.
Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Alphabet and Google, announced the commitment on Wednesday November 4, 2026 at the Mantap Malaysia Bersama AI event at Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim present. The figure is an additional $15 billion, about 61 billion ringgit, across 2027 and 2028, which Google says is expected to contribute an average $1.1 billion a year to gross domestic product. 3 new data centre sites are named: Eco Business Park in Puncak Alam and the UMW High Value Manufacturing Park in Serendah, both in Selangor, and Springhill Industrial Park in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. They sit alongside the existing campus at Elmina Business Park in Selangor, announced in May 2024 as Google's first Malaysian data centre and cloud region under a 9.4 billion ringgit commitment. On power, Google will work with Tenaga Nasional Berhad and renewable developers to add more than 1 gigawatt of clean capacity to the national grid, with no public subsidies, and says it will pay for all the electricity its campuses consume. On water, $160 million, about 651 million ringgit, goes to an off-river storage reservoir and treatment plant in Negeri Sembilan designed to produce 65 million litres of treated water a day. On employment: more than 37,000 local jobs a year during construction in 2027 and 2028, about 6,000 of them in construction itself, with average annual labour income of $378 million, and more than 9,000 long-term local jobs once operating, at wages Google puts 45% above Malaysia's median. Google also commits to upskilling 800,000 Malaysians by 2031 and to working with more than 80 Malaysian entities. Anwar Ibrahim called the commitment a monumental milestone, said Malaysia does not want an AI divide where only an elite few thrive, and said the environmental conditions were imposed and accepted. Not established: megawatts, per-site timelines, and Google's own wording.

What to watch
- Would strengthen itGoogle or Tenaga Nasional publishes a signed power agreement, or ground is broken at Puncak Alam, Serendah or Port Dickson, or another hyperscaler names new Southeast Asian capacity, by December 31, 2027.
- Would weaken itNo construction begins at any of the 3 named sites, or Google restates the figure below $10 billion, or a Malaysian approval is refused, by December 31, 2028.
Why it weighs this much
Cost is medium: nothing is spent yet, but naming 3 specific industrial parks, a utility partner and a $160 million water asset is harder to walk back than a headline figure. Commitment is medium rather than high because no filing, contract or permit has been published, and a 2-year investment plan announced on a government stage can be rephased quietly. Reversibility is moderate: land and power agreements bind, announcements do not. Persistence is years, because the grid and water assets outlast the campuses and the skills pledge runs to 2031.
The words
- Off-river storage
- A reservoir filled from a river when flow is high and drawn on later, so supply does not depend on the river at the moment of use.
- Cloud region
- A cluster of data centres in one place that lets customers keep their data inside that country.
