Confirmed 4 Nov 2026 · Compute A one-minute read

Qualcomm's phone chip revenue fell 26% as it leaned on an unbuilt data centre business.

Handset revenue was $5,137 million in the quarter, against $6,961 million a year earlier. Caveat: the $5 billion data centre target is for fiscal 2027 and was reiterated, not new.

Until now

Qualcomm is a phone chip company edging into AI servers.

Now

Its phone business is shrinking fast and the server business is unbuilt.

Why it matters

A quarter of Qualcomm's largest business went away in a year, and the company is raising prices because wafers, packaging and memory all cost more. Those costs rise because AI buyers outbid phone makers for the same capacity. The bill for the AI build is now landing on consumer hardware.

Established

  • Handset chip revenue fell 26% year over year, to $5,137 million.
  • Qualcomm says industry input costs are rising and it is repricing products.
  • It reiterated a $5 billion data centre revenue target for fiscal 2027.

Not established

  • That AI demand caused the handset fall. The release does not say so.
  • That the data centre target will be met. No backlog is disclosed.
  • The size of the Amazon collaboration. No value or volume is given.

The record

The results were issued as Exhibit 99.1 to a Form 8-K, dated San Diego, November 4, 2026, for the fiscal fourth quarter and year ended September 27, 2026, read at sec.gov. Fiscal 2026 GAAP revenues were $43,120 million, down 3% on $44,284 million, with GAAP earnings per share of $12.70 against $5.01, lifted by a $5.7 billion income tax benefit worth $5.32 a share from releasing a valuation allowance. Non-GAAP earnings per share were $10.54, down 12%. Fourth quarter GAAP revenues were $10,322 million, down 8%, with GAAP net income of $1,251 million against a loss of $3,117 million, and non-GAAP earnings per share of $2.17, down 28%. Inside the chip division, handset revenue was $5,137 million, down 26% from $6,961 million, and $24,072 million for the year, down 13%. Automotive was $1,990 million in the quarter, up 89%, its first $2 billion quarter, and $6,004 million for the year, up 52%. The internet of things line was $1,888 million, up 4%. Licensing revenue was $1,304 million, down 7%. Chief executive Cristiano Amon is quoted saying fiscal 2027 marks the start of the non-handset revenue inflection, including the ramp of the data centre business, that non-handset revenues are projected to grow by more than 60% year over year, and that the company is reiterating its fiscal 2027 data centre revenue target of $5 billion. The release's own headline items name renewed long-term licence agreements with Apple, Huawei and Transsion, and an announced multi-generational product collaboration with Amazon for AI data centres. Under Business Outlook the company states that the semiconductor industry is experiencing a broad-based increase in input costs across wafer fabrication, assembly, test, advanced packaging, memory and other materials, that it is taking actions to reflect the higher costs in its product pricing, and that the full benefit will show in chip division gross margins in the second half of fiscal 2027. First quarter fiscal 2027 guidance is revenues of $10.4 billion to $11.2 billion, with chip division revenue of $9.0 billion to $9.6 billion, now inclusive of Data Center. The company returned $11,671 million to shareholders in fiscal 2026.

How it got here

  1. Oct 5

Huawei and Qualcomm cross-licensed their AI and compute patents, with Qualcomm buying some. Edition 043's card.

  2. Oct 28

SK hynix reported an 80% operating margin on memory and said it would return about 100 trillion won to shareholders. Edition 064 carded the other side of the same squeeze.

  3. Nov 4

Qualcomm reports handset revenue down 26% to $5,137 million, automotive up 89%, and tells investors it is repricing products for higher wafer, packaging and memory costs.

Who has to react

Phone makers facing Qualcomm's new prices, and their customers; Apple, Huawei and Transsion, whose licences were just renewed; MediaTek, which competes for the same sockets; Samsung and SK hynix, selling the memory that is repricing; Amazon, named as a data centre partner; and Nvidia and AMD, whose buyers are winning the capacity auction.

What to watch

  • Would strengthen itAnother top 10 semiconductor company states in a filing or results release by March 31, 2027 that AI demand is raising its memory, wafer or packaging costs, or that it is repricing consumer products as a result.
  • Would weaken itQualcomm's chip division gross margin recovers to fiscal 2025 levels, or handset revenue returns to growth, in any quarter reported by December 31, 2027.
  • Would weaken itQualcomm's reported data centre revenue for fiscal 2027 comes in below $2.5 billion, or the target is withdrawn, by December 31, 2027.

Why it weighs this much

Signal strength
CostLow
CommitmentMedium
ReversibilityModerate
PersistenceYear

Cost is low, because publishing results is an obligation rather than a choice, and the costs described were imposed on Qualcomm rather than taken on by it. Commitment is medium: the numbers are audited and certified, and the pricing actions and the $5 billion target are public promises management will be held to, but a target reiterated is weaker evidence than a target raised. Reversibility is moderate, since input costs can ease and handset demand can return. Persistence is about a year: the company itself says the repricing shows up in margins only in the second half of fiscal 2027. We score this modestly on purpose.

The words

Input costs
What a chip designer pays others to make, package and test its chips, plus the memory sold alongside them. AI buyers are bidding for the same capacity.
Advanced packaging
The step that stacks and connects chips into one part. It is the scarcest link in AI hardware and now in phones too.
Licensing revenue
Royalties Qualcomm collects on patents, charged on handsets sold by others. It moves with phone volumes, not with its own chip sales.
