Reported 6 Nov 2026 · Security A one-minute read
OpenAI partnered with the firm whose researchers got into its employees' accounts in July.
OpenAI said on November 6 it will test its systems jointly with Hacktron and widen Hacktron's access to its cyber models. Caveat: no payment, duration or scope document has been published.
Labs buy red-teaming from vendors and keep frontier cyber models in-house.
A lab hands its cyber models to outsiders who already breached it.
Why it matters
A bug bounty pays for a finding. This hands the finder standing access to purpose-trained cyber models and a seat choosing what gets tested. The chain that worked in July ran through a third-party forum and a sign-on flaw, which is the seam agents create as they connect services.
Established
- OpenAI and Hacktron will jointly pick high-priority targets inside OpenAI's systems.
- Hacktron gains wider frontier model access through OpenAI's Daybreak Red tier.
- Hacktron chained a forum flaw and an OpenAI sign-on flaw on July 25.
Not established
- Any payment, headcount or term. OpenAI published no commercial detail.
- Which models Hacktron receives. Daybreak Red names none publicly.
- That third-party integrations caused any later OpenAI incident.

The record
Reported, not verified. OpenAI's own post at openai.com/index/partnering-with-hacktron refused us 3 times in this session, so we have not read it. We read 2 independent accounts of it dated November 6, both naming the Daybreak Red tier and quoting Hacktron's chief executive. The July chain and the $6,500 bounty are established separately, by NBC News on September 18 and Hacktron's own account of September 13. Reading OpenAI's post moves this to verified. Verification date November 20, 2026.
Two independent accounts dated November 6, 2026 report the same OpenAI post. Unite.AI says OpenAI announced a partnership with Hacktron to find vulnerabilities in its systems, focused on third-party service connections, with engineers from both jointly choosing high-priority areas to test. The stated target is weaknesses appearing when applications, identity systems and infrastructure are linked, and OpenAI says the findings will harden its defences. BigGo Finance, also November 6, reports Hacktron receiving broader access to OpenAI's frontier models through Daybreak Red, and quotes Hacktron chief executive Zayne Zhang: "The future of cybersecurity won't be defined by who has the largest security team," and that OpenAI is "setting a strong example by putting frontier cyber models in the hands of security researchers." It adds that Cathedral researchers joined OpenAI's next security sprint the same week. The record behind it: OpenAI's Daybreak announcement of August 10, 2026 created 2 tiers, Red giving purpose-trained cyber models for authorised vulnerability research, and Blue giving safeguarded general-purpose models for defence, both limited to approved parties under identity verification and legal attestations. On July 25, 2026 Hacktron chained remote code execution in the image-processing path of a Discourse-hosted OpenAI forum with an OpenAI single sign-on flaw, compromised multiple employees' ChatGPT accounts and reached a connected GitHub integration. To show access without reading sensitive code it used an employee's Codex account to open a harmless pull request in OpenAI's internal monorepo, then stopped. OpenAI confirmed a fix about 14 hours after the first report; Discourse had one 2 days after its report. OpenAI paid $6,500 on September 1, 2026, for the OpenAI-side finding only, the forum being out of scope. Hacktron published its account September 13 and said the work was not fully autonomous and that human guidance mattered. NBC News reported it September 18, OpenAI confirming: "We thank the researchers for contacting us and sharing their findings." No evidence other attackers used the flaws. Not established: any commercial term, the models involved, exclusivity, or headcount.
How it got here
- Jul 25
Hacktron chains a Discourse forum flaw and an OpenAI single sign-on flaw, reaches multiple employees' ChatGPT accounts and a GitHub integration, and opens a harmless pull request in OpenAI's internal monorepo to prove it.
- Aug 10
OpenAI announces Daybreak, with a Red tier of purpose-trained cyber models for authorised vulnerability research and a Blue tier of general-purpose models for defence, both gated by verification and legal attestation.
- Sep 1
OpenAI pays Hacktron $6,500 through Bugcrowd, for the OpenAI-side finding only. Hacktron publishes its account on September 13; NBC News reports it September 18 and OpenAI confirms.
- Oct 6
Anthropic lifts cyber blocks for verified security teams that let it keep logs, Edition 044, and extends its Cyber Verification Program. The same gating logic, 4 weeks earlier.
- Nov 4
OpenAI's own pipeline finds 948 root-access bugs in Linux, Edition 074, and GPT-6 Cyber follows in Edition 076. OpenAI is now both vendor of cyber models and subject of their use.
Anthropic and Google, which gate cyber model access through their own programmes; Bugcrowd and HackerOne, whose bounty model this bypasses; Discourse and every third-party service inside a lab's identity perimeter; Cathedral, named in the same week's sprint; and the insurers and buyers asking who tests the testers.
What to watch
- Would strengthen itOpenAI or another frontier laboratory discloses a security incident reaching its systems through a third-party integration or identity provider rather than a model, by June 30, 2027.
- Would strengthen itA second frontier laboratory grants a firm that breached it standing frontier cyber model access, or OpenAI hires Hacktron staff or acquires the company, by December 31, 2027.
- Would weaken itOpenAI publishes the commercial terms and they read as ordinary vendor procurement, or the partnership ends with no disclosed finding, by March 31, 2027.
Why it weighs this much
Cost is low on the published record. No sum, term or headcount is disclosed, and widening an existing access tier costs a laboratory very little. Commitment is medium: a named public partnership with a quoted chief executive is a reputational position, and standing access to purpose-trained cyber models is a decision with a security committee behind it. Reversibility is easy, because access tiers are revoked with a switch and a partnership with no published term can lapse in silence. Persistence is months: nothing states a duration.
The words
- Red team
- A group paid to attack a system as a real attacker would, with permission, to find what defenders missed. A bug bounty pays per finding instead.
- Daybreak Red
- OpenAI's gated tier giving approved researchers purpose-trained cyber models for vulnerability research and exploit validation. Access needs identity verification and attestations.
- Single sign-on
- One login that opens many systems. A flaw in it hands an attacker everything that login reaches, which is what happened in July.
